Thank you, San Diegans! For more than a year, we’ve gathered feedback from our residents, business leaders, key stakeholders, and more to ensure San Diego remains a global leader in sustainable and experiential tourism for the next ten years and beyond.
Today, we’re pleased to share the final draft of our comprehensive 10-year Tourism Stewardship Plan (2024-2034) made possible by your generous input. This plan marks a pivotal moment in our approach to ensuring San Diego’s robust future tourism development and community engagement.
A long-term vision beyond the beach
While our stunning coastline, centrally located convention center, and mild climate have drawn tourists and visitors to our shores for decades, this new draft plan embraces taking a broader, more nuanced vision of our city’s identity. Moving forward, we need to showcase San Diego as a vibrant mosaic of cultures and experiences that extend far beyond what people already know.
The plan, developed through extensive community engagement including countless interviews, meetings, and forums with stakeholders throughout the region, strives to introduce visitors to “the San Diego they don’t know.” This includes highlighting the city’s role as a cultural hub where beach culture meets artistic expression and spotlighting our multi-cultural national sport teams intersecting with our highly regarded restaurants filled with culinary innovation.
Prioritizing Sustainable Tourism
Looking ahead to 2034, our plan also envisions San Diego as the epitome of sustainable tourism emphasizing:
- Environmental Stewardship: A unified framework for leadership, collaboration, and coordination amongst industry partners regionally.

- Balanced Enjoyment of Natural Assets: The plan also recognizes the unique opportunity to position San Diego as an ecologically diverse destination and to leverage its breadth of natural assets for new outdoor experiences.
Six Pillars of Opportunity:
- Arts, Culinary & Culture: Emphasizing the city’s world-class cultural institutions, artistic community, and iconic neighborhoods.
