The San Diego Tourism Authority and its partner in the Japan office, in cooperation with the MLB Café Ebisu, hosted a public viewing party of the 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star game in Tokyo. The venue has an amazing 360 degree screen that allowed guests to see the game from every direction.
Our Japanese representative, Tomoe, had an informational table set up in the room where attendees could get more information about the destination, and was able to do a presentation about San Diego during commercial breaks. The San Diego logo appeared throughout the venue and our San Diego video was played. To help encourage sales, we partnered with one of Japan’s biggest trade clients, JTB, to provide San Diego package information at the booth as well.
The team worked with a Japanese distributor to provide local San Diego craft beer at the event (Green Flash, Pizza Port, Stone & Karl Strauss) and the Padres donated a jersey for Tomoe to wear and a signed baseball to raffle off at the event.
Additionally, Riki leveraged his network to have a Japanese celebrity attend and speak on our behalf! Kumiko Takeda is a famous Japanese actress who now lives most of the year in San Diego. She returns to Japan often to film, and participate in events. Ms. Takeda attended the MLB All Star viewing party and spoke about how much she enjoys living in San Diego and encouraging the crowd to come visit. The SDTA will be working with her more throughout the year – as her schedule allows.
