This Sunday, June 19, brings Juneteenth — the annual commemoration of black history and culture, observed across America. Juneteenth is now a federal holiday, and events are planned all around San Diego to mark the occasion.
Among the happenings this year are the annual Juneteenth Freedom Bike Ride hosted by Balboa Park’s WorldBeat Center, an SDTA member, in partnership with the Major Taylor Cycling Club San Diego. (Taylor was a pioneering cyclist who in 1899 became the first African-American to be named the sport’s world champion.)
The festivities will include post-ride live music, a children’s bike rodeo and the “soft” opening of the WorldBeat Center’s new exhibition “Pathways to Freedom in the Americas.”
