SDTA Response to Coronavirus

February 25, 2020 By Hallie Jacobs Leave a Comment

The health and safety of both visitors and residents is the highest priority for the San Diego Tourism Authority, and we are closely monitoring the situation and its impact on inbound travel to the region. Based on information from the U.S. Travel Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk to most Americans remains low. The SDTA will continue to work with these sources and our travel partners, including Brand USA, Visit California and regional airports, to closely monitor all developments.

SanDiego.org website

We created a landing page on SanDiego.org to keep visitors updated on the growing coronavirus situation and its impact on travel to San Diego. We will continue to work with national and regional agencies to keep this information updated.

San Diego County emergency declaration

On Feb. 19, the Board of Supervisors voted to establish the County’s declaration of a local health emergency and proclamation a local emergency to deal with the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19. The vote was in response to the federally mandated quarantine for potentially-infected individuals stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

Paid media

SDTA has paused all marketing programs in China and will continue to monitor the situation with Chinese industry partners to determine plans for marketing efforts going forward.

Social media

SDTA is working with Chinese media partners to develop and implement appropriate social media messaging. While paid advertising campaigns have been paused, San Diego-branded accounts will continue to post organic content. The messaging has been changed to reflect a more travel-inspirational tone, removing calls to actions to book. This is in line with the trend of “digital travel” that is occurring by those in lockdown.
