According to a AAA news release posted today, May 23, 2011, the Memorial Day weekend kick-off to summer will stimulate about the same number of Southern California travelers as last year. However, the survey projects a slight -0.4% decline in car travel and an 11.4% increase in air travel from Southern California residents.
The good news is that San Diego was chosen most often after Las Vegas as the intended travel destination for the weekend. The AAA survey also projected flat travel nationwide. Interestingly, AAA reported that advance bookings made in January and February (prior to gas price increases) for Memorial Day weekend was up significantly in 2011.
Do you think that travelers felt more confidence in their future economic situation, or were the advance booking supplier discounts too good to pass up?
